World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series 2020: Uruguay
The second and final round of the men’s World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series 2020 kicks off in Uruguay this weekend over two days from 22-23 February.
The men’s series features 13 core teams from the six World Rugby regions with three invitational teams from the Americas. In December we broke down the known information for this new rugby series.
Two countries from representing Asia are Japan and Hong Kong.
Results Sevens Challenger Series 2020: Chile
The first round was played last weekend in Chile. Germany won the title after a 10-0 victory against Hong Kong in the final. Germany had beaten the other Asian contender, Japan, 12-5 in their semi-final, while Hong Kong beat hosts Chile, 17-14.
Soteras Merz, a regular member of the German 7s team since 2012 told World Rugby “The win in Chile made us very happy, but we have to ensure that we start again and take it step by step, game by game. If we play to our strengths, we will be successful. This Series is very good because it allows us to play back-to-back tournaments and it is important for us, as a team, to be able to perform over two weekends at the highest level.”
HK 7s coach Paul John told the HKRU website “Overall, we are pleased with our progress. We finished second and reached the final, which is one of our goals at every tournament, but we suffered a second loss in a final, which is frustrating. It was not a great final. I thought it was very flat and we didn’t play our best. We started very poorly and fell off some tackles which helped them at key moments.”
Germany took a maximum 22 Series points from Montevideo, while Hong Kong are on 19 points as the runners-up. Japan took 17 points. Both HK and Japan are still well placed to finish in the top 8 and proceed to the qualifiers at the Hong Kong Sevens.
