World Rugby Medical Commission Conference 2024
The World Rugby Medical Commission Conference 2024 takes place this week from 22-24 October in Lisbon, Portugal as the dual Medical Commission Conference and Rugby Science Network conferences provide updates and seminars on a range of issues pertinent to the game.
The governing body said that “leading figures from across rugby” participate in the annual Medical Commission Conference and Rugby Science Network (RSN) Live events between 22 and 24 October, and they will be streamed live with online pre-registration available.
Chief Medical Officer of World Rugby Prof Eanna Falvey said, “The World Rugby Medical Commission Conference is always a key moment in the rugby calendar. Player welfare remains World Rugby’s number one priority and over the next week we will be sharing all the valuable information gathered so far this year and learning from leading academic experts, rugby medics, players and coaches, as well as leading figures from other global sports.”
Rugby Asia 247 has joined these in previous years and there is a wealth of information discussed and it’s incredibly informative.
Prof Eanna Falvey added, “We know that we can never stand still on player welfare in rugby and I’d encourage anyone with an interest to join us between 22-24 October to see and hear the level of time, rigor and dedication that is being shown by the sport right around the world on this vitally important part of our game.”
In 2024, Rugby Union and competition Chief Medical Officers will be involved again as well as some of the leading academics, and player representatives as they “share knowledge on improving player welfare.” There will also be representatives from a range of other sports including the NFL, Rugby League and soccer.
In addition, key World Rugby medical working groups will present on concussion, women’s player welfare, immediate pitchside care and the newly formed injured players charities group.
Some of the key focus areas include:
- How smart mouthguards are being used by medics and coaches across the game – Former England players Danny Care and Sarah Hunter are set to share their experiences with smart mouthguards.
- The future of managing head impacts
- Women-specific player welfare
- Player loads
