Men’s Rugby 7s – Tokyo 2020 Results
Fiji retained their men’s Olympic rugby sevens gold medal as they beat New Zealand 27-12 in a fantastic gold medal match at Tokyo Stadium.
NZ co-captain Scott Curry was wonderful all tournament but he and his NZ team could not stop the Flying Fijians and Waisea Nacuqu made sure of a second Olympic title when he successfully converted a penalty at the end of the game. Jerry Tuwei becoming a double Olympic gold medal champion.
Argentina, who were beaten 26-14 by Fiji in the medal semi-finals, secured bronze after the memorable win over the Blitzbokke (South Africa) in the Quarterfinals, and then beating Great Britain 17-12 in the bronze medal final.
For the Asian teams, Japan and Korea were disappointing and the two Asian representatives fulfilled their pre-tournament predicted standings in 11th and 12th. Hosts, Japan, recovered from 12-7 down to record their first win of Tokyo 2020 and condemn the Republic of Korea to 12th place in their final game. It was the only win of the Asian men’s team at Tokyo 2020.
Korea at least scored tries in their first few games but had some heavy defeats against strong opposition – their skills and game management was below par compared to the other teams.
Asia Rugby had post-game Olympic Coverage of the Rugby 7s with a panel reviewing the games and Lomano Lemeki said the Japan’s 7s program needs to be completely revamped. This includes new coaches being appointed or they might struggle to qualify for Paris 2024.
Rugby News Japan sarcastically made the point that JRFU Chairman Kensuke Iwabuchi would review the 11th placed Olympic finish by the men’s team coached by – Kensuke Iwabuchi. Segawa had been axed after leading Japan to 4th at Rio 2016 while Karauna was “let go” after getting the team promoted to World Series.

Women’s Rugby 7s – Tokyo 2020 Results
France and New Zealand played the gold medal final for the Women’s Rugby Sevens after NZ had been pushed all the way and beat Fiji in Extra Time in the semi-final match. New Zealand eventually won the gold 26-12, France claiming silver, and Fijiana eventually took the bronze beating Great Britain.
The Black Ferns now impressively hold the World Series 7s, World Cup 7s, Commonwealth Gold 7s and Olympic Gold.
The Sakura 7s (Japan) finished 12th at Tokyo 2020 following a 21-12 loss to Brazil in their final game. Even in their previous game versus Kenya, they blew the win with the last scrum when they lost possession and Kenya went on to score the winner.
To be fair the team was a disappointment at the Tokyo Games (only the game against the USA was good) and they were outshone by China, especially in their head to head match which the Chinese won 29-0 to move on to the quarter-finals.
China went on to play ROC in the seventh-place play-off and won a fantastic game 22-10. The China women’s teams were close in every game they played and were the shining light of all of the Asian teams at the Rugby 7s, by some distance.
It will be interesting to see what the plans within China Rugby are – but they have built a great platform with this squad and won many new fans in Asia and globally with their performances.

Tokyo 2020 Rugby 7s Highlights
Some of the highlights of the Tokyo 2020 Rugby Sevens included:
- This fantastic interview with NZ Black Ferns player Ruby Tui – who threw the media handbook out the window and endeared herself and the sport to new and existing fans.
What an interview!

- The smiles and tears, in particular from the women teams, who really seemed to make the most of the opportunity of being at the Olympics in what has been a tough road for all the athletes.
- Fiji Men, of course, retaining gold and Jerry Tuwei becoming a double gold medal champion.
- The emotions and the upsets – lots of drama which resonated online with new fans from across the globe hanging onto their rugby streams of the rugby, and hopefully, genuinely, adding to the fanbase of the sport.
- The performance from the China 7s ladies was a real highlight and they could really build something special if the sport grows in the massive country (Read more from the China 7s coach pre-Games).
- Argentia Men winning the QF vs the Springboks with a man down showed some serious heart and grit, what a game!
