Thailand rugby event: David Campese

An event with former Wallaby rugby legend David Campese in Bangkok, Thailand during the RWC 2019 has been announced by the hotel venue hosts. The Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan will attract a huge number of rugby dignitaries and famous players to the region.

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok, via Facebook have said they are “are organizing a Rugby World Cup event at Altitude, our rooftop venue, to watch the game Australia VS Wales (September 29th) with our special host, David Campese (Campo) to do signings and give commentary on the match.”

Campese will also be running commentary on the RWC game.

The Thailand Rugby Union was officially invited.

Campese (known as Campo) is a well known former international rugby player for Australia and a rugby pundit. He played for the Wallabies 101 times, with 85 tests at wing and 16 tests at fullback.  He won the Rugby World Cup in 1991.

More recently, Campese but has been a very outspoken rugby pundit and critic of Australian rugby.

In August he was unsuccessful in his application for the coaching role at the NSW Waratahs in the Super Rugby competition. He said afterwards: “Working with NSW Rugby and RA for the past 18 months, I travelled the country coaching and connecting with clubs and schools. I enjoyed meeting these passionate and dedicated supporters and was fortunate to engage in many informative conversations with coaches, players, parents and supporters from many different clubs and schools.

Sadly, every single one of them felt the same way about rugby: disillusioned, disconnected and helpless about the lack of support. I had hoped that my involvement at this level would make a difference and for some it hopefully has, however (sic) became clear to me that you cannot change a culture from the bottom up.”

RWC 2019 events in Asia

There are a number of RWC events announced in Asia so far. In Seoul, Korea the rugby community recently held a benefit dinner and Hong Kong Rugby will hold an England team dinner.  Singapore also has an RWC event.
