The Taiyo Seimei Women’s Sevens Series 2024 is played over four legs across April and May, with 12 Japanese women’s 7s teams involved.
Mie PEARLS had beaten Japan Sports University 31-19 in their semifinal to face rivals Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix in the final – after the latter had won their semifinal against Yokohama TKM.
However, in the final of the second round of the Series, Phoenix came out on top to avenge the first round, where Mie Pearls had beaten Phoenix in the semifinals but went on to lose the final against Nagato Blue Angels 17-24 in Kitakyushyu.
Mie PEARLS has players playing overseas themselves but also in their ranks including internationally capped players. These include Grace Okulo who has been a star for Kenya on the Challenger Series 2024 and teammate, Janet Okello, who was a member of the Kenyan women’s national rugby sevens team at the 2016 Summer Olympics – and was MVP of the opening round of the Taiyo Seimei Women’s Sevens Series 2024.
Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix Rugby Club finished 3rd overall in 2023 and now must be among the log leaders, while PEARLS ended up 5th last year.
The Taiyo Seimei Women’s Sevens Series 2024 moves on to Suzuka from May 5 & 6 at the Mie Kotsu G Sports Forest Suzuka Stadium for Round 3.
