Taiwan Rugby League 2023
The Taiwan Rugby League 2023 will consist of four rugby clubs this season: Taipei Yuan Kun, Hai Yang Ocean Feed, New Taipei Lei Xu Lions, and Tainan Kaier. The league is not fully professional but the union has aspirations to be professional in the future some reports suggest.
The Taiwanese semi-professional rugby union championship provides a breakdown of the players and teams (only in Chinese though) – the teams are corporate-funded much like the Japanese League and Taipei Yuan Kun are the defending champions.
President of Chinese Taipei Rugby, Du Yuankun, has reportedly announced that he hopes to start preparations for the professionalisation of rugby in the country by 2025 as well as building an exclusive rugby stadium purpose-built for the sport. When the league was launched last year he had hoped to make the sport fully professional within 5-6 years.
The Taiwan Rugby League 2023 kicks off on 24th June and runs until 29th July which is followed by the semifinals and finals – which seem to be only scheduled for December based on the schedule we have seen.
Due to the lack of professional rugby match officials, the league has indicated it will invite foreign referees to officiate and also hold regular training camps for referees and coaches in Taiwan reported Rugby Asie.
The Chinese Taipei national teams have done well recently, with the men winning the SEA 7s 2023 and the U19 Boys losing to Hong Kong China but beating Malaysia in the 2022 age-grade Asia Rugby Championship.
