South Africa Win HSBC World Sevens Series 2021

The Blitzboks (South Africa) made it a clean sweep in Canada, as they won both events in Vancouver and Edmonton to win the Men’s HSBC World Sevens Series 2021. The HKRU Men claimed 8th overall and 7th in Edmonton,

HSBC World Sevens Series 2021

The Blitzbokke beat GB in the final 24-12 in Edmonton and finished the two rounds undefeated after beating Kenya in the final in Vancouver the week before. The Blitzboks were the leading try scorers, leading points scorers and winners of every game across both weekends to finish the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Great Britain finish second in the Series standings, ahead of Kenya, who reached the podium again in Edmonton by overcoming spirited hosts Canada 33-14 to finish with bronze.

Great Britain’s women won in Vancouver by beating the USA 22-5 to secure the women’s fast four title for the second successive weekend. Canada beat Mexico 63-5 to take third place.

The 2022 World Series kicks off with successive events in Dubai on 26-27 November and 3-4 December 2021. The full 2022 Series schedule will be announced shortly said World Rugby

Hong Kong Rugby Sevens Men

The Hong Kong Rugby Union men’s sevens team finished 8th in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2021.

Hong Kong lost to Series champions, South Africa, in the cup quarter-final, 47-0 but the team was more disappointed after losing to Germany in the 5th-place play-off, 21-7.  However, the HK men beat Series regulars Ireland 21-14 in the 7th place final.

Hong Kong emphasised that growth was the priority over wins and losses. The HK men’s squad was missing regulars such as Salom Yiu Kam-shing, Tom and Alex McQueen and Raef Morrison.

The Hong Kong team return to three weeks quarantine and then need to prepare for the Asian Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai in November (which could mean qualifying for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022, the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2022,  and the defence of the Asian Games gold medal in China in 2022.
