Seru Rabeni Fundraiser: Hong Kong
A Seru Rabeni Fundraiser has been organised in Hong Kong to raise funds to “sponsor children in Seru’s hometown of Nasolo, Fiji through their education, and supporting Fiji ‘s U19 rugby players to play overseas.”
The event is a quiz night and is organised by T8 Consulting. They raise funds in the name of Seru Rabeni, the Fijian rugby union player and (Hong Kong) Pirates’ coach, who died in 2016.
Seru Rabeni Fund
In the wake of Rabeni’s unexpected early passing, the Seru Rabeni Fund was set up to assist his contributions to his village in Fiji.
- In 2015 a fundraiser was held in Hong Kong to raise monies to build a kindergarten in Nasolo. The Ministry of Education in Fiji supported the initiative and his partner Susan worked with them to complete Seru’s dream project.
The Discovery Bay Pirates in Hong Kong set up The Seru Rabeni Fund with 3 major aims:
- To continue supporting the fundraising activities in Seru’s home village, Nasolo. The first project was the Seru Rabeni Memorial Kindergarten which was opened on 6th August 2018.
- Continue to build an education and rugby pathway offering Fijian youth opportunities overseas. The Rabeni Sevens annual rugby tournament hosted in Nasolo helps with this.
Seru himself took on a number of projects.
Who was Seru Rabeni?
Seru Rabeni was a Fijian Sevens (13 caps) and 15s (30 caps), national team player. He also played for the Pacific Islanders team on 9 occasions. He represented Fiji at the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups.
In his club career, Rabeni played in Fiji, New Zealand, UK and France. He then was the Head Coach/Player in 2014-15 for the Discovery Bay Pirates in Hong Kong. At the time, he was rumoured to be HK’s next National Coach.
Sadly, on the morning of 15 March 2016, Rabeni suddenly died in Fiji. The cause of death due was due to heart failure.
