Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament 2023
The JRFU has confirmed the return of the Sanix World Rugby Youth Tournament 2023 which will take place during Japan’s Golden Week holiday and run from April 28th to May 5th. In total 12 Japanese and international teams will compete in Boys XV, while 8 teams compete in a two-day Girl’s Sevens tournament from April 28-29 2023.
The Sanix rugby tournament is held in conjunction with the Sanix Sports Promotion Foundation, Global Arena, the Kyushu Rugby Football Union and Fukuoka Rugby Football Union. Annually the tournament is held at the Global Arena sports complex in Munakata City, on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu,
The popular youth rugby tournament was cancelled from 2020- 2021, and an amended tournament with only local teams was held in 2022 due to the global pandemic.
The tournament has been running since 2000 and JRFU said “While there is a strong focus on rugby, equal importance is placed on the off-field exchange among the teams. With the entire event taking place within the Global Arena complex and with all teams housed on-site, there is a tremendous opportunity for interaction between the players off the pitch, during mealtimes and other social events.”
Several players who have played at the tournament have gone on to become capped internationals such as Japan’s Timothy Lafaele, England’s Jack Nowell, South Africa’s JP Pietersen and New Zealand’s Owen Franks, Colin Slade and Matt Todd.
