Samantha Scott Lands Philippines Women’s 7s Rugby Head Coach Role
The Philippines Rugby Football Union had advertised its vacant Women’s 7s Rugby Head Coach role earlier in 2024 and has announced the successful appointment of Samantha Scott (Feausi).
We spoke to PRFU President Ada Milby in 2024, who confirmed the Head Coach of the Philippine Volcanoes Women’s 7s Team’s task this season would be moulding the development teams (Philippine Rising Stars) as they are set to compete in the Asia Rugby Trophy Series 2024 after dropping down from the Asia Rugby Sevens Series last season.
Samantha Scott (Feausi) has been based in Hong Kong, more recently as Chief Operating Officer of Valley RFC whose Women’s Premiership club won the 2023/2024 Premiership Grand Championship.
Scott is a former Hong Kong, China 7s National Team player and captain, and has an extensive background and skillset in coaching, sports administration & management and education.
She was also part of the Hong Kong China Rugby Union Development and Elite Performance programs before enforced union cutbacks due to the pandemic.
Her role with HKCR was as Head of Women’s Rugby Development for more than four years after two years in the role of a Women’s Rugby Development Manager.
The PRFU said via a statement, that the new Head Coach has her roots in the Philippines and Scott said, “When this opportunity with Philippine[s] Rugby came up, it was the perfect mesh of two aspects I am very passionate about – rugby and my family roots in the Philippines.
Having been involved in the game for over 20 years as an international player and coach, I am passionate about spreading my knowledge and empowering players. I feel very honoured to be chosen for the role, as I watched how hard the Philippines Volcanoes team have worked to be where they are now and have a strong belief and vision for the team’s potential to be a force to be reckoned with in the near future. Laban Pilipinas.”
Philippine Rising Stars, the development teams of the PRFU men and women finished the 2024 SEA 7s Tournament in 5th place which was won by Thailand Women and the Malaysia Men.
The Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy is due to be played from October 4-6, 2024, in Kathmandu, Nepal.
