Qualified Teams Prepare for Tokyo Olympic 7s Rugby
With all of the national rugby 7s team confirmed for the Tokyo Olympics following the Repechage tournament in Monaco, many national sides enter this weekend heading into their final tournaments to prepare for Olympic glory. We look at a very busy schedule of rugby over the weekend of June 25-27 2021.
Following the Monaco 7s event, in which Hong Kong and Kazakhstan women and the HK men didn’t manage to qualify, we know that the Asian contenders in Tokyo are the Japanese Men and Women, Chinese Women and Korean Men.
The Korean men will be in action in Los Angeles this weekend and get much needed international preparation but the Chinese women have yet to see international action and opted for local tournament preparation. Neither of the Japanese 7s national teams has played internationally either, recently.
There is now less than one month until the Games starts on 23rd July 2021, with the Paralympic Games scheduled to start on 24th August.
The details of all of the squads for the women and men will be confirmed by World Rugby.
The Pools for the Olympic Games were also confirmed.
Fans at Tokyo Olympic Games 2020
UPDATE: On Thursday 8th July 2021, it was announced by the Olympic organisers that they would bar spectators from most events at the Games due to a rise in COVID-19.
The organisers of the Olympic Games also confirmed in June 2021, that a maximum of 10,000 fans will be allowed to attend venues at this year’s rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (although overseas fans are still not permitted).
The IOC and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee confirmed that the Japanese authorities have set up guidelines for spectators, “which include ensuring that masks are worn in venues at all times, while ‘speaking in a loud voice or shouting will be prohibited’.”
The men’s rugby 7s teams will play across the first three days, 25-27 July 2021, with the finals set for Wednesday, July 28 2021.
The women’s rugby sevens games will take place from the 29-30th July 2021 with the finals taking place on Saturday, July 31 2021. See the Tokyo 2020 Schedule here.
Oceania Rugby Sevens 2021
This weekend, from Friday 25th – Saturday 26th June 2021, Townsville in Australia will host the Oceania Rugby Sevens event which includes a number of likely medal contenders for the Rugby 7s in Tokyo 2020.
The national sevens teams include four women and men’s teams from:
- Australia
- Fiji
- New Zealand
- Oceania

Quest For Gold Sevens – Los Angeles
The Quest for Gold Sevens” is the final competition for several Olympic qualified teams including the USA Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens teams who will be playing at home in Los Angeles this weekend. The matches will be played at the Dignity Health Sports Park.
The matches start on Friday, June 25th with rounds of exhibition play, where results will not determine final rankings.
Women’s final rankings will be based on Saturday, June 26th results, Women’s teams with the highest totals on Saturday will compete for the Championship Final.
Men’s teams have elected to compete in a round-robin, where the final championship standings at the end of the tournament determine the winner.

- Kenya (replaced by Mexico)

Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series 2021 Moscow
Following their Tokyo qualification, Russia’s women 7s team are seeking to also claim the overall Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series for 2021 in Moscow this weekend., Friday 25 and Saturday 26 June 2021.
The Men’s completion will also be played with eight European sides in action.
In addition to the focus on the Rugby Sevens this weekend, there is a full schedule of international and global domestic rugby XVs taking place between June 25-27, 2021.

International XVs
- The Japanese Brave Blossoms take on the British & Irish Lions in Edinburgh in what is a historic first fixture between the two teams. The match takes place on Saturday (evening time across Asia).
- Samoa will be playing the Maori All Blacks on Saturday 26th June 2021.
- U20 Six Nations carries on in Europe with all nations involved playing.
- England A vs Scotland A also will be played on Saturday 26th June 2021.
- The European Rugby Championship XV sees Georgia play the Netherlands.
Domestic Rugby XVs
A number of international players will have their final club outing of the season before joining up with their national teams for the 2021 mid-year tours.
- The English Premiership Final is played on Saturday between Exter Chiefs and Harlequins and features a number of internationals.
- The French Pro 14 also is taking place on Saturday with La Rochelle taking on Toulouse.
