The Hong Kong China Men’s XV tour continues this weekend with the second of three tests seeing them face Paraguay on Saturday 13 July at the Estadio Heroes de Curupayty in Asuncion.
The Paraguayans are ranked 38th while Hong Kong China remain 24th in the latest World Rugby rankings and this it the first time they will play each other.
The HKCR men narrowly lost the opening match of their South America Tour against Chile last weekend with a final score of 22-17 while this is Paraguay’s first test since losing 41-22 at home to Brazil at the end of August 2023. It is also their test against non-South American opposition since they beat the Cayman Islands 57-7 in the Americas Rugby Challenge in August 2019.
Head Coach Andrew Douglas said of Paraguay, “We know Paraguay has a big forward pack and a very strong front row. They will want to scrum us and challenge our set piece. Similar to Chile, they will try to be direct and batter us so we will have to go with our style and Hong Kong China identity and try to move them around a little bit and play with a bit more speed.”
Hong Kong China prop James Holmes will earn his test debut as the coaches have made changes to rest players and ensure everyone gets game time, with half an eye on Brazil in the final tour test next weekend.
World Rugby indicated that rating points will be on the line in the fixtures involving teams exclusively outside of the top 20 this weekend, which include Paraguay playing Hong Kong China as well as Chile playing Belgium.
Francisco González (Uruguay) is the match referee.
