Olympic Games Paris 2024 – Rugby Sevens Pools
Following the Monaco Repechage, the Rugby Sevens pools for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 were drawn On Olympic Day. The sevens competitions will take place in the French capital from 24-30 July 2024.
With the teams confirmed, 12 teams will compete in three pools of four teams for both men’s and women’s rugby sevens competitions as the rugby sevens kick off the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on 24 July at Stade de France, two days before the Opening Ceremony.
World Rugby said “The 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams were allocated to three pools of four teams based on their rankings due to performances over the last two years of the HSBC SVNS Series, Challenger Series and other World Rugby-sanctioned tournaments.”
World Rugby Chairman, Sir Bill Beaumont added: “In one month’s time, our sport will have the honour of kicking off Paris 2024 in style with an exciting and spectacular brand of rugby that will excite the hundreds of thousands of fans in Stade de France and capture millions more hearts and minds of those watching around the world.
It is safe to say there are no easy pools at the Olympics and the Asian teams will face an uphill challenge to try and reach the quarterfinal stages.
- The Japanese men are in Pool A with NZ, Ireland and South Africa
- The China women are in a tough Pool A with defending champions NZ, Fiji, and Canada.
- The Sakura Sevens are in Pool C with the USA, France and Brazil.

Paris 2024 Rugby Sevens – Gilbert Quantum Match Ball
World Rugby also announced Gilbert’s Official Quantum Match Ball for the rugby sevens competitions in Paris (feature image).
The official Quantum Match Ball has been, “developed for the unique style of the sevens game, the Multi Matrix grip offers higher, more defined pimples which increases the ball’s surface area, enhancing the handling and offload skills shown by sevens players,” stated World Rugby.
The official Gilbert ball is inspired by the Paris 2024 brand and the design features the Stade de France venue colour system at its core with the famous Olympic Rings, Paris 2024, World Rugby and Gilbert at the centre of each panel.

Men’s Sevens Rugby Olympic Games Paris 2024
The men’s competition will take place from 24-27 July, with the men’s gold medal match on 27 July, the first team sport gold medal of the Paris 2024 Games awarded.
Pool A sees top-seed New Zealand grouped with Ireland, Japan and South Africa, while SVNS league winners Argentina are in Pool B where they will meet Australia, Samoa and Kenya. Hosts France will face two-time men’s Olympic gold medallists Fiji in Pool C alongside USA, and Uruguay.
Simon Amor, Head Coach of the Japan Men’s Sevens Team said following the pool announcement, “New Zealand have consistently ranked highly in the World Series and with the most experienced roster they will be aiming for their first Olympic victory. Ireland has been the most consistent team in this year’s World Series and South Africa will be coming into the match with high confidence after winning the repechage after an up-and-down season.
However, although we may be at a disadvantage if we perform at our best on the day we are confident we can compete with these teams on equal terms and excite the Stade de France.”
Women’s
Sevens Rugby Olympic Games Paris 2024
The women’s tournament will be played from 28-30 July.
Reigning Olympic Champions and SVNS League Winners New Zealand women start their gold medal defence in Pool A against Fiji, Canada and China.
Pool B sees Rio 2016 Olympic and SVNS 2024 Grand Final champions Australia facing Ireland, Great Britain and debutants South Africa.
Hosts France have been placed in Pool C as one of three top-ranked teams and face USA, Japan and Brazil.
Takashi Suzuki, Head Coach of the Japan Women’s Sevens Team said, “We are very excited that our pool opponents for the Paris 2024 Olympics have been decided. All of the teams are strong, having competed in the World Series, and France, who will be hosting the tournament in their home country are third in the World Series, so I think the battle at the Olympics will be a challenge for the Sakura Sevens as well.
We would like to use the time remaining to thoroughly prepare so that we can demonstrate what we have accumulated up until now on the Olympic stage. We would like to ask for your continued support for the Sakura Sevens.”
