NZ Women Completed the Three-Peat And Argentina Won a Maiden Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens – Kai Tak Stadium Was A Winner In 2025

New Zealand’s women won the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens to claim the three-peat which means no other women’s side has ever won the prestigious tournament, while Argentina won a maiden Hong Kong 7s tournament. Hong Kong China was also victorious in both the women’s and men’s Melrose Claymores at Kai Tak Stadium making a fantastic introduction to the world of Sevens Rugby.
More than 110,000 fans across three days created an incredible atmosphere to begin the new era at Kai Tak Stadium in style as both the Argentina men and NZ women extended their leads in the HSBC SVNS standings after five rounds and as the teams move to Singapore this weekend, much has already been decided in terms of top 8 and bottom 4 placements.
The Black Ferns 7s beat cross-Tasman rivals Australia 26-19 in a tense women’s final, while the Canadian won bronze with a 21-17 win over France.
Jorja Miller, who was the HSBC Player of the Final, said: “We knew we had to come out for finals footie and I’m so proud of the group. We love Hong Kong and the history of it. The crowd and the atmosphere here, it gets us going, it brings out the best rugby.”
On the men’s side of the draw, after New Zealand and Fiji had been knocked out, the tight men’s final saw Argentina secure their first Hong Kong title with a 12-7 win against Olympic champions France. Australia beat Fiji 22-21 to claim bronze with 19-year-old Sidney Harvey scoring the winner to secure bronze.

It was the Argentinean’s third successive title win of the 2024-2025 SVNS season and the result means Los Pumas Sevens are 16 games unbeaten and extend their lead at the top of the series table to 12 points, ahead of Fiji.
HSBC Player of the final, Marcos Moneta, scored the crucial second try in the final, and said: ‘It’s amazing to win here, it means so much to us as Hong Kong is a really historic tournament. I got my debut here and last year I broke my fibula here before the Olympic Games, so it was a mixture of emotions. My parents decided to be here with me. These are the things I was thinking about at the anthem. It is the perfect day.

World Rugby Chairman Brett Robinson was in attendance and said: “This is one of the great sevens events of the global calendar, and it has been for 50 years. So for me, personally, to be here for the first time is a great privilege. It’s also fantastic to be here at this incredible new stadium, uniquely designed for rugby sevens. We’ve had over 110,000 fans in attendance and seen some great rugby played over the last three days, showcasing the best of sevens.”
The Japanese women finished 7th overall beating Brazil 32-14 and the Chinese women finished 9th defeating Spain 12-7 to claim. The placements mean that no matter what happens in Singapore next weekend, the Japanese have finished in the top six while the Chinese women are likely in the bottom four.

There was also a special low-altitude flyby across Victoria Harbour by flagship carrier Cathay Pacific on Sunday as flight CX8100 flew across Kai Tak to mark the 100th anniversary of the former airport – it did not fly over the stadium as many fans (and players) had expected.

Hong Kong China Men retained the Melrose Claymores while the Women won the title for the first time after being runners-up in 2024 in front of absolutely scintillating and deafening crowd support on Sunday.
Women’s Head Coach Andy Vilk said “It’s been amazing for the squad and the girls selected to play here – and with this crowd, it’s been a real privilege for us. We can see how much media interest there is and we spent the week visiting schools and colleges and this is what it’s about – it’s a great chance for us to connect with a wider rugby community in Hong Kong.”

Hong Kong China Men’s Head Coach Jevon Groves said after the team had completed a lap of honour, “It was a good reaction to the disappointment of the Challenger Series and to do so in front of a terrific home crowd. We spoke all week of tapping into memories of our own experiences and first memories of the Hong Kong Sevens. We wanted to perform well for ourselves but also to show that we are back and to put in performances that we can be proud of.”
We spoke with legendary 7s coach Sir Gordon Tietjens who was at Hong Kong Sevens with the Chinese Men’s team for the Melrose Claymore and the team made the final but lost to the hosts. He told us about being at Kai Tak Stadium: “I played in the old stadium as a player in 1983, and started coaching at the previous stadium with New Zealand in 1994 – so it’s been a great experience coming here in 2025 with the Chinese men.
It brings back lots of good memories of being in Hong Kong and just coming back and being involved in the capacity of trying to help teams get better and help with the coaches is great.”
