Malaysian rugby: an overview
There is an incredible amount of rugby being played throughout Malaysia. With a rich rugby history and traditions, the Malaysia Rugby Union was founded in 1921 and is one of the founding members of Asia Rugby.
Malaysian national rugby team
Asia Rugby Championship – Premier
The men’s national XVs rugby team will play the Premier Division of the Asia Rugby Championship in 2019 alongside Asian heavyweights Hong Kong and Korea (Japan will, of course, be in the Rugby World Cup 2019). Matches are due to run from May to June.
Malaysian rugby 7s
After competing in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in 2018 and a successful SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2017 (the men picking up gold and the women claiming bronze), the women’s and men’s 7s teams are on the rise and looking forward to a busy 2019 season. The SEA Games in late 2019 will be considered a highlight.
Malaysian club rugby
The Malaysian Rugby League is the premier rugby competition in Malaysia but a number of regional leagues are also run through the country.
Malaysian Rugby League
The Malaysian Rugby League kicks off in a jam-packed February. Teams are split into the groups Premier A and B (4 teams each). In addition, 4 teams feature in Division 1C and 1D.
- Premiere A: Keris Conlay, SSTMI Tsunami, Serdang Angels, UiTM Lions
- Premiere B: ASAS RC, Iskandar Raiders, Mersing Eagles, NS Wanderers
- Division 1C: ATM Blackhawks, KL Tigers, Poly MAS Hornets, Silver Gaurus
- Division 1D: ATM JLJ, COBRA Dev, Edwardians Tiger RC, Polis Bersatu
The league takes place over six weeks, starting mid-February with matches being played on Saturdays and Sundays. The finals are due to take place on 24th March 2019 at Padang A, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang.
Premier matches will take place at the Padang A, UPM Serdang. The Division 1 matches from the pool until the semi-final will be played at the Padang Bellamy, Kem TUDM Sungai Besi.
Johor rugby league
The Johor rugby league is split into two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2 (each with a Pool A and Pool B. 19 teams are due to participate in 19, which is the largest field yet. The league will kick off on the 23rd February and the final is due on the 13th April 2019.
Veteran Alumni Rugby League
The Veteran Alumni Rugby League will take place for the 2nd time and has 8 teams competing in a league format. The league starts in late January.
KK League
The Kasi Group Kota Kinabalu Rugby League 2019 enters its 5th year and has 11 teams competing in two pools from around Kota Kinabalu, Papar and Keningau. The defending champions are Sabah OSCA Warriors. The league also commences on the 16th February 2019 with games taking place at SUKMA Rugby Field and the University Malaysia Sabah.
- Group A: Sabah OSCA Warriors, Sabah OSCA Warriors Pangaits, Keningau Crocs, Papar Lions, Universiti Malaysia Sabah
- Group B: comprises KK Sharks, SABORC, Putatan Scorpionz, Rugby Monsters, Navy Orca and Sabah Prison (PRIDE RUGBY).
Super School Rugby 15s tournament
The Super School 15s is aimed at supporting the XVs format of rugby at the school level. Eight teams compete and the league will start in March 2019. The league is held over two stages, a round-robin qualifying stage to establish the ranking of the 6 teams, and a playoff stage where the teams will play for the Cup, Plate and Bowl.
