Malaysia Rugby Votes In New Board 2023-2027
Updates on Malaysia Rugby social media pages indicate they have voted in their new board to take the union forward from 2023-2027.
Malaysia Rugby EXCO Board
From what we can gather (no English updates available), Amir Amri bin Mohamad has been elected as the new President of Malaysia Rugby and will serve alongside Mohd Azmir bin Zainul Abidin (the former national team player and coach) as Deputy President.
All of the positions we could ascertain from Malaysia Rugby Facebook are:
- Amir Amri bin Mohamad – President
- Mohd Azmir bin Zainul Abidin – Deputy President
- Syamsul Erwin bin Muhamad Lagis – Vice President
- Abdul Rashid bin Adlie – Vice President
- Nik Ramadhan bin Nik Abdullah – Member of the Malaysian Rugby Union Council
- Mohammad Faeez bin Mohamad Alias – Member of the Malaysian Rugby Union Council
- Supt Muhammad Najib bin Hamzah – Member of the Malaysian Rugby Union Council
- Hamrizal bin Hamdan – Member of the Malaysian Rugby Union Council
- Shahizam bin Tukiran – Member of the Malaysian Rugby Union Council
- Hazeline Aasyiqeen binti Jaafar – Member of the Malaysian Rugby Union Council
The ten-member board doesn’t seem to very representative when it comes to gender, which is something Asia Rugby usually prides itself on, with only one female member elected to the board it seems.
State Of Malaysian Rugby 2023
Malaysia Rugby seems to have fallen behind some of their peers in the region, with the UAE men surpassing them in the 7s and XVs games. Just a few years ago there were talks of the professionalism of rugby, and they had a team in the now-defunct Global Rapid Rugby. Malaysia is also one of the unions offered a chance to compete in the proposed Asia Rugby Grand League (although there have been no official updates for more than 12 months).
The Malaysian women’s 7s are also off the pace from the leading teams such as Japan, China, Hong Kong China, Thailand and Kazakhstan. The National Rugby Development Program (NRDP) is sending its youth girls team to the World Schools Festival which is played in Thailand this December.
Editors Note – There is undoubtedly a huge amount of rugby played across the Southeast Asian country but it’s never been easy to get a clear picture of the strategy or growth of the game in Malaysia, so this new board might be able to communicate their aspirations over the coming months.
There is hardly a weekend that passes where we don’t see a rugby tournament being played across Malaysia.
