Katie Sadleir Set To Leave World Rugby
World Rugby confirmed on August 17 2021 that Katie Sadleir, General Manager of Women’s Rugby, is to leave her role to join the Commonwealth Games Federation as Chief Executive Officer.
Katie has been with World Rugby since 2016, “collaborating with unions and regions to develop the transformational 2017-25 women’s strategic plan to accelerate the global development of women’s rugby and women in rugby at all levels, both on and off the pitch, within the sport”, said a statement from the governing body.
Sadlier is set to take up her new position in November 2021 and she said: “I believe collectively we have achieved some huge changes that have made a real impact for rugby globally. I’m especially proud of the leadership pipeline programmes that we have put in place for women both on and off the field as we strive, where ever possible, to make sure decisions are made with women, for women and girls.”
World Rugby added that Katie had created an “unstoppable movement and momentum that the rugby family will continue to harness and push forward to ensure the phenomenal advancement of women’s rugby and women in rugby continues to flourish.”
Ada Milby, Asia Rugby EXCO and PRFU President told Rugby Asia 247:
“Katie didn’t just lead the charge for women’s rugby, she jump-started a movement by developing leaders, engaging stakeholders and establishing aspirational targets. At the halfway mark of the women’s strategic plan, it’s incredible to see what has been achieved so far.
Commonwealth Games will be in great hands under Katie’s leadership and I wish her every success moving forward.”
Sadleir previously represented New Zealand at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games in synchronised swimming, and at the Edinburgh 1986 Commonwealth Games where she won a bronze medal. She also served as the Assistant Chef de Mission for New Zealand at the Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games.
