Japan XV Squad Confirmed For World Rugby Pacific Challenge 2024
The JRFU confirmed the 28-player Japan XV squad which will be involved in the World Rugby Pacific Challenge 2024 in Samoa from April 10 to 20 at Apia Park.
The Japanese XV will play Manuma Samoa, Fiji Warriors, and Tonga A in a round-robin tournament and the side which finishes with the most competition points will be crowned the Pacific Challenge 2024 Champions.
The selected JRFU side is in a final training camp in Chiba Prefecture until April 4, 2024, before they head to Apia. In addition to the 28 squad members announced, four additional players will join the final training camp in Japan as injury backups.
Japan XV Squad 2024
Due to the unique age restrictions of the playing squads, the JRFU has had to deviate from usually selecting a mix of capped Brave Blossoms, and players on the verge of national team selection, so in 2024, the Japan XV comprises players largely from Japan’s U20 side.
The Japan XV team for the Pacific Challenge will coached by Japan’s U20 National Team Coach, Naoya Okubo, who said; “The team has been preparing hard, both mentally and physically within a demanding training regime. We brought the forwards into camp in February (2024) and were then joined by the backs in March.
The team have also played four practice matches against four separate League One (JRLO) sides, giving us valuable game time against quality opposition.”
Fiji are the tournament defending champions and Japan last won the Pacific Challenge in 2020.
