Japan Qualify for World Wheelchair Rugby World Championship 2022
Japan have qualified for the World Wheelchair Rugby World Championship 2022, following the cancellation of the 2022 WWR Asia/Oceania Championship due to be held in Auckland, New Zealand.
World Wheelchair Rugby announced in November 2021, that as the event in NZ was cancelled due to issues related to the COVID pandemic, the top three teams on the WWR World Ranking list from Asia/Oceania have qualified to attend the WWR World Championship at Vejle, Denmark in October 2022.
The three qualified nations are Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
The Japanese team did very well at the Tokyo Paralympics held in 2021, claiming the bronze medals. In mid-2021, the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation also confirmed the participation of six countries that will compete at the Wheelchair Rugby tournament at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham in Alabama, USA and that Japan will be the only Asian representation.

World Wheelchair Rugby Championships is an international wheelchair rugby competition contested by the national teams and the first Wheelchair Rugby World Championships was held in Notwil, Switzerland in 1995.
WWR Championships 2022 – Denmark
Vejle in Denmark aims to fill Spektrum Stadium “and create the atmosphere that has been so sorely missed at the recent Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The WWR says that fan capacity has been expanded due to the high ticket demand experienced in 2019, and the first tickets are available now.
Event director Torben Nygaard added “We are really looking forward to hosting the World Championship next year and creating a safe and fun fan experience is a high priority for the organising team. For the teams competing, there is no better feeling than playing in front of happy fans, and we hope to once again see many Danes as well as travelling supporters in Spektrum.”
President Richard Allcroft said: “The Danish people and the city welcomed us in 2019 for the European Championship and I remember the spectators enjoying our sport and making plenty of noise. We are now World Wheelchair Rugby, and our new brand has been received well.
Of course, we are still working through the challenges of a pandemic, and we have every confidence that the 2022 World Championship will take place in a safe environment.”
