ICBT Inter University Sevens: Sri Lanka
The second ICBT Inter-University Sevens will be played in Sri Lanka on August 24th 2019. The rugby tournament will include ten of the top University teams in the country.
In a report by The Papare, it claimed: “After organising a successful inaugural tournament last year with over 12 teams taking part, the ICBT Campus Sevens 2019 edition looks to take the game to another level within the Universities and is set to become the flagship inter-university sevens tournament due to its immense popularity.”
ICBT Chairman Dr. Jagath Alwis said that the tournament hopes to invite overseas-based teams in the future “and turn this local tournament into an internationally recognized event.”
Lasitha Gunaratne, Chairman of Sri Lanka Rugby Union added “It is heartwarming to see an interest in Rugby at this level. These efforts will no doubt pay dividends for the future of Rugby on the island, by grooming talented young players, who one day might have the opportunity to pursue their passion for the game at the highest level and play for Sri Lanka”.
ICBT Inter-University Sevens format
The University Rugby 7s teams will play for the Cup, Plate and Bowl championships. Furthermore, the 10 teams will be categorised into two groups.

- NSBM
- JOHN KOTHALAWALA DEFENCE UNIVERSITY

- MORATUWA UNIVERSITY
2018 Results
ICBT are the defending champion and placed in Pool A, in 2018 they beat BMS 22-12 in the Cup final. Last year 12 sides were split into four pools of 3 rugby 7s teams.

Sri Lanka Rugby has made plans known to professionalise rugby 7s in the country and target gold medals in major championships.
