The pool draws took place at HBF Park which will host the SVNS for Perth’s inaugural event in Western Australia to get the series going in 2024.
Tourism Western Australia Managing Director Carolyn Turnbull said, “The HSBC SVNS will be broadcast around the world in many of Western Australia’s key visitor markets, like New Zealand, China, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States, and hosting the tournament will elevate our state on a truly global stage, as the fastest-growing events destination in South East Asia.”
The captains of the SVNS 12 men’s and 12 women’s rugby sevens teams have been preparing and soaking up the sun in Western Australia ahead of the third round of HSBC SVNS 2024.
HSBC SVNS 2024 Perth Pools Women
Australia’s women lead the charge in the SVNS Series after winning the opening two rounds and will have their eyes on a hattrick of tournament wins at home. They will face Canada, Great Britain and South Africa in pool A.
Australia women’s captain Charlotte Caslick said: “It’s really exciting to be playing in Perth for the first time and it’s been great to see all the support around the city this week. As a team, we’re super excited for the chance to play at home and look forward to seeing plenty of gold in the stands over the weekend.”
Australian Women’s Head Coach, Tim Walsh said of the draw: “We haven’t played those teams in a while so we’re excited. We know how strong they are, particularly Canada, who are quickly improving and definitely a team to watch out for. After a nice break, we’re fresh physically and mentally and ready to go after a good week and a half of training. Other than Demi being injured we’re at a good fitness level, and we’ve got a really strong squad to pick a team from.”
France, who have been a real threat this season and are working towards claiming a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, are in Pool B with Fiji, Brazil and Spain.
On Australia’s heels are the reigning Olympic champions New Zealand, and they will face off against the USA, Ireland and Japan in pool C.
The Japanese Sakura 7s were preparing in Sydney before heading into Perth. The team is currently 10th of 12 teams on the SVNS log ahead of South Africa and Spain, but just behind GB and Brazil. They need to target a 9th finish overall to avoid the end of season promotion-relegation battle.
New Zealand women’s captain Risi Pouri-Lane added: “The team are really pumped to start this Olympic year. It’s the first time here in Perth and we’re really looking forward to it. A lot of the girls have a lot of family here so we know we are going to have heaps of support here and we are looking forward to getting started.”
Japan will look to improve and need to secure more Series points to try and avoid being in the bottom four when it comes to the final rounds.
HSBC SVNS 2024 Perth Pools Men
The men’s SVNS 2023-2024 title race still has several contenders at this early stage and Argentina are the current standings leader after winning in Cape Town and earning silver behind SA in Dubai,
The Blitzboks (who were poor at home), Fiji, New Zealand, Ireland and Australia all sit within six points of each other on the SVNS Series log.
This makes Pool A even more intriguing as Argentina will meet South Africa, Canada and Spain.
Argentina men’s captain Santiago Álvarez said from Perth: “We are very happy to have played the first two tournaments very well, but the season is very long and we still have some things to correct. We are enjoying it and trying not to feel the pressure of being at the top. This year is more competitive than ever, every team is very tough and we must be very focused and keep doing what we have been doing until here.”
The hosts, Australia, have been drawn together with Ireland, Great Britain and USA in pool B for Perth. Australian
Men’s Head Coach, John Manenti added: “The men’s competition is tough, there are no soft games. Ireland has been consistently finishing in the top four, Great Britain gets better the more they play together, and the USA have a host of superstars, including Perry Baker returning for Perth. We can’t wait to get to the West and continue to build towards the Olympics”.
Double Olympic champions Fiji will play reigning Series title holders New Zealand as well as a very competitive France and Samoa in the most tightly contested pool C.
