Hong Kong Sevens Teams for Monaco Repechage Announced
The Hong Kong Rugby Union (HKRU) has confirmed the two Hong Kong Sevens teams that are heading to the Tokyo Olympics repechage tournament being held in Monaco from 19-20 June 2021.
The final qualification event will feature 12 women’s and 12 men’s teams and Hong Kong will have teams competing to reach the final and book their tickets to Tokyo.
The HKRU women have not played international sevens since the Asian Olympic qualifiers in November 2019. The Women’s 7s team will be led by Melody Li Nim-yan and Natasha Olson-Thorne as co-captains.
Women’s Coach Iain Monaghan said “We have had 18 months to prepare, so we are as ready as we possibly can be. You train to play and we are as prepared as we can be; I think the girls have collectively had enough of intra-squad games and pushing their individual mental and physical levels to their limits.”
The women’s squad of 13 included veterans and possible new caps, and Monaghan added:
“We play because we love the game and this is the first opportunity we have had to play on a global stage in a while. There is a lot of excitement, and I am sure a wee bit of trepidation because it has been a while, but we back ourselves and the process that we have to navigate all of that.”
The Men’s team is coached by Paul John and the squad also sees some regular faces in the form of Alex McQueen, James Hood, and Max Woodward as Captain for the team and one of the most capped sevens players in Salom Yiu Kam-shing.
Salom Yiu said: “For some of us, this is our last and best shot of going to the Olympics, so we have been treasuring every training opportunity and making sure we are ready both as a team and as individuals.”
The two teams will leave Hong Kong on 9 June 2021 to head to Monaco.
