Hong Kong China Rugby Women XV To Face ACT Brumbies In Australia
HKCR have confirmed their Hong Kong China Rugby Women XV squad is travelling to Canberra, Australia as they embark on a trip to train with and play the women’s Brumbies Super Rugby team as part of a cross-continental partnership with the ACT Brumbies.
The women’s XVs will have the Asia Rugby Women’s Championship (ARWC 2024) to compete in later this year against Japan and Kazakhstan, with a top-two finish guaranteeing WXV 2024 rugby. Asia Rugby still has to confirm its 2024 calendar but we believe the ARWC 2024 could take place in Hong Kong in May (TBC).
Some of the HKCR women players compete in both the 7s and XV teams, and the 7s side recently returned from Dubai in the first round of the Challenger Sevens Series 2024 – with two more legs to go this year as well as the Olympic 2024 Repechage tournament.
HKCR said of the squad heading to Australia, that they “can look forward to an action-packed week of training, live scenarios and unit sessions before a game against the Brumbies on Saturday 3rd February at Viking Park Stadium, with their squad featuring Wallaroos stars Tania Naden, Tabua Tuinakauvadra, Jay Huriwai, Faitala Moleka and Siokapesi Palu.”
Hong Kong China Rugby Women XV Head Coach Royce Chan said of the tour: “It’s great to have an occasion to train alongside such a well-established set up. We’re taking a good mix of players with us, featuring a big cohort of younger up-and-coming players, so it will be fantastic to expose them to that professional environment and allow them to get more experience. We’re really looking forward to the challenge and the chance to learn from the Brumbies and develop our best practice”.
The Brumbies women are led by Head Coach and Wallaroos Assistant Scott Fava.
The match will take place as part of the Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies double header which also sees the Super Rugby Pacific trial between the Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies and the Suva-based, Fijian Drua following the women’s match.
The Brumbies also said online that the “fixture will provide an opportunity for Brumbies fans to engage with Wallaroos representatives Tania Naden, Tabua Tuinakauvadra, Jay Huriwai, Faitala Moleka and Siokapesi Palu.”
Hong Kong China Rugby General Manager of Performance Jo Hull added: “We’re always looking to find exciting prospects for our representative teams to continuously improve their skills and have a chance to play quality opposition.
Our relationship with the Brumbies is a fantastic opportunity for learning and development for our players, coaches and support staff. We have a really exciting year of international rugby ahead, so this type of preparation, particularly for our younger players, is key.”
