The Hong Kong China Rugby New Year’s Day Youth Rugby tournament will take place at HKFC on January 1st and celebrate the 56th edition of the annual event – a great way to kick off rugby in Asia in 2024!
The union said online, “Our much-loved New Year’s Day Tournament returns for 2024. Hosted by Hong Kong Football Club, make sure you join us for a fantastic afternoon of top-tier youth rugby and hospitality.”
Traditionally the New Year’s Day Youth rugby tournament sees the Hong Kong versus Overseas-based schoolboys and girls compete against each other and the action gets underway at 12:30 in 2024, enough to let tender heads have a lie in after seeing in the near year festivities.
The five-decade-long Youth Tournament aims to showcase the best of the Hong Kong community’s youth talent and the tournament has seen many go on to earn international rugby caps. Aside from several Hong Kong-capped alumni, Graeme Morrison also went on to win 35 caps for Scotland after playing in the tournament.
Hong Kong 2024 New Year’s Day Youth Rugby Tournament Schedule
The 2024 tournament will feature four U19 and U16 boys and girls rugby matches and the popularity of the tournament was highlighted by the sheer number of players nominated to be involved – 210 players by local clubs along with 110 overseas applications.

- 13:50 George White Trophy for U16 boys – Hong Kong Dragons vs Oversea Lions
- 15:10 Lassies Quaich for U19 girls – Hong Kong Dragons vs Oversea Lions
- 16:40 Middlesex Cup for U19 boys – Hong Kong Dragons vs Oversea Lions
The final match will be an opportunity for the HKCR U20 coaches to have another look at the playing group who will be putting their hands up for selection as the national team heads to the World Rugby U20 Trophy in 2024 after the U19s successfully defended the Asia Rugby Championship in late 2023.
Attendance at Hong Kong Football Club is free to all members of the public, who can enter via the Hong Kong Jockey Club entrance to Happy Valley.
