The Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby 7s 2020 tournament director has said they will not be officially opening the tournament until later in the year. Usually, May 1st would be the date when team registrations are opened for the huge sevens rugby event.
UPDATE: The World Series event was cancelled in July 2020 but the organisers are hoping to run a scaled-down event with the Dubai Rugby 7s in December 2020.
Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby 7s 2020
The tournament in Dubai, is scheduled for Thursday 26th – Saturday 28th November 2020 at The Sevens Stadium, Al Ain Rd, Dubai, UAE.
On their social media, the Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby 7s said: “While rugby is on hold, many of the northern hemisphere tournaments have moved dates to later in the summer. We continue to prepare for the Dubai Rugby Sevens to kick off the 2020/2021 HSBC World Sevens Series season. Over the coming months we will keep in regular contact to update you on the reality of this. The sporting and events landscape is changing on a weekly basis and we will do our best to ensure you know the ramifications of this on the tournament so that you can factor in to your own planning.
Our planning is done with a giant COVID-19 elephant in the room. But prepare we must… as when the world emerges from this battle, Dubai will be waiting. We are going to put on one stunning festival of Sevens.
The Dubai 7s is usually officially opened on May 1st opening to the waiting list of new eager teams. However, we don’t currently feel that is responsible, so we are not officially opening the tournament until later in the year.”
Invitation Tournament Dubai Rugby Sevens
300 rugby teams annually compete each year at the Invitation Tournament Dubai Rugby Sevens in a variety of groups and levels, in addition to the main HSBC World Severn Series event.
COVID-19 disruptions are, of course, the reason the delay but the tournament is confident of going ahead adding that “We will return to the field. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
The Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby 7s have said they will keep in “regular contact with all teams that have expressed an interest in the 2020 tournament with a final decision being made with plenty of time for teams to make arrangements and plans to join us in Dubai.”

HSBC World Sevens Series 2020
The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and HSBC Singapore Sevens 2020 have already both been postponed until October due to the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. The Singapore Sevens (10-11 October) will now take place one week before the Hong Kong Sevens (16-18 October). Other events are still pending new dates.
