The inaugural Dimbulla Estate Chiang Mai 11’s League 2023 will see the opening round of matches of the Northern Thailand rugby union league commencing on 19th August.
A statement online says; “Co-Sponsor Whitesmiths and The Dimbulla Estate Rugby 11’s organisation is proud to support Chiang Mai Rugby in this new format and look forward to seeing the action & excitement, that having a rampaging No 8(6), will bring, to the Tournament.”
There have been several versions of leagues comprising local clubs in northern Thailand over recent years.
Dimbulla Estate is sponsoring this 11s league and also sponsoring other rugby tournaments in Thailand. The winery owner is Dilip Kumar, the former Chairman of the NSW Rugby Union, Australian Rugby Union is the driving force behind the Rugby 11’s concept.
Kumar stepped down from his role with ARU as Chairperson as far back as 2005 but was only in the role from April-December of that year. He quit his role on the board of the Australian Rugby Union in 2006 after contributing to the game for six years. He was on the board of the New South Wales Rugby Union from 1999 to 2005 (including chairperson for three years), and a member of the International Rugby Board Council and the SANZAR executive committee.
Editor’s Note – We have said before we are not fans of the 11 format as there is no need for more formats in rugby and fans are already struggling with the formats of existing competitions – 7s and 10s rugby are plentiful in the Asian region and work as is.
Chiang Mai Rugby 11s League 2023 Format
Matches in the Thai 11s league will be played in a 4 x 11 minutes format and all league matches will be played at Chiang Mai University. The 2023 season will span 10 weeks in total, with two matches each game day.
