Chile vs Hong Kong China 2024 Match Preview
The Hong Kong China XV Men’s tour to South America gets underway with an opening test against RWC 2023 qualified side Chile at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca on Saturday 6 July 2024
This is only the second ever test between Hong Kong China and Chile (known as Los Cóndores) with the Asian side having won the only encounter 13-6 in 2007, and in 2024 the two sides are ranked 23rd and 24th with the South Americans slightly ahead.
This will be the Chilean’s first test since the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France and they have not won an international test since they secured qualification for that tournament with a 31-29 win away to the USA in July 2022. For Hong Kong China, they are on an eight-match win streak but the Chileans are the highest-ranked side they will face.
Chile, who made their Rugby World Cup debut in 20243 will play home test matches against Hong Kong China, Belgium and Scotland in July 2024 and they have retained the services of Pablo Lemoine as Head Coach but have signed on new coaching staff.
Chile’s squad for the three-test home series includes 12 uncapped players – seven in the forwards and five in the backs, while all of the Hong Kong China squad was involved in winning the Asia Rugby Men’s Championship 2024 with wins over the UAE, Malaysia, and South Korea (the side’s fifth consecutive title).
HKCR Men’s Head Coach Andrew Douglas has selected 11 starting players from the win over South Korea: R Cinnamond, Z Cinnamond, C McCullough, J Hrstich, J Sawyer, L van der Smit, PJ Laidler, M Avitabile, H Sayers, T Hill, and S Brien.
Gonzalo de Achaval will make his test debut as a referee with Sergio Alvarenga (Paraguay) & Francisco Gonzalez (Uruguay) as assistants.
