Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2024 Pools Confirmed
The pools for the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens were drawn after the LA SVNS 2024 and the Hong Kong Stadium can look forward to some mouthwatering clashes as it hosts the Sevens for one last time from 5-7 April 2024.
Fittingly, Fijian sevens legend Waisale Serevi drew the pools at Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles. The pools, due to the unusual results at the LA SVNS, have given us some key pool clashes to look forward to at the HSBC SVNS 2024 in Hong Kong China.
Robbie McRobbie, CEO of Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) said recently, “We believe that the tournament is on track to return to its pre-pandemic sell-out status and are confident to bid the Stadium a good farewell with another weekend of Hong Kong Sevens magic.”
Of the pools for Hong Kong, he added; “The schedule announcement is a key milestone in our event preparation. It allows fans to now build excitement for their most-anticipated on-field matchups and favourite entertainment acts.”
Women’s Pools – Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2024
World Rugby Sevens General Manager, Sam Pinder said: “The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is always a highlight in the global rugby sevens calendar for players, teams and fans alike, and 2024 promises to be a year to remember.
Fans can now mark their calendars, prepare their costumes and get set for three days of exhilarating rugby sevens action as the best men’s and women’s teams in the world come to showcase their skills in front of the famous Hong Kong crowd.”
The women’s draw sees Vancouver finalists New Zealand and France pitted against each other in Pool A, with Brazil and Great Britain.
Michaela Blyde told us at the start of the season of returning to the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, “Hong Kong is the home of Sevens. It’s really special to play there and to bring the women’s game of Sevens to Hong Kong,” she said.
Current SVNS leaders Australia will be in Pool B with South Africa, Ireland and Fiji.
Australian playmaker and captain Charlotte Caslick who became the first woman to reach 50 tournaments in the Series, told Rugby Asia 247 previously “Hong Kong is iconic. And when you think of Sevens everyone thinks of the Hong Kong Sevens. So to be able to play in that is awesome, but we fell short in the finals last time around so we’d love to win a Hong Kong Sevens title – that would be on everyone’s bucket list
In Pool C, the USA and Canadian women will renew their rivalry with Asian contendors Japan, and Spain in Hong Kong.
