The biggest social rugby tournament in Cambodia, the Cambodia Tens, have confirmed the dates for the 2020 edition in Phnom Penh are October 24-25, and team registrations are now open.
Cambodia Tens 2020
The annual social rugby tournament includes the following divisions:
- Women’s Open
- Men’s Open
- Vets (over 35 years old)
In addition, some youth exhibition rugby games are usually played over the course of the weekend.
Teams are able to register now and the deadline for the payments are 31st July 2020. The squad number is restricted to a maximum of 15 players per team. Teams that do register receive:
- Entry to Tournament
- Cambodia 10’s Awards & Saturday Social Event
- Sunday BBQ
Who does Cambodia Tens benefit?
According to to the organisers, the tournament benefits its own organisation, Kampuchea Balopp.
“All remaining funds raised during the event goes to the KAMPUCHEA BALOPP program which gives disadvantaged
and disabled children access to sport in Cambodia and has a strong focus on grassroots rugby.”
Social rugby tournaments in SEA
The Cambodia 10s rugby tournament used to be very popular and comparatively more affordable than other social tournaments in the region. However, one criticism over recent times is that although the team registration fees have risen, the teams and players do not receive much more.
Social tournaments have embraced live FB streams at the tournaments (Vientiane Tens, RBSC Tens etc), teams received ice baths and other perks as the number of tournaments in Southeast Asia have grown. Cambodia Tens has yet to do so or expand on what it offers participants, so it will be interesting to see how 2020 shapes up.
