Brazil vs Hong Kong China 2024 Match Preview

The Hong Kong China Men’s XV tour comes to an end this weekend with the final match being played against Brazil on Saturday 20 July at the Estádio Nicolau Alayon in São Paulo.

The HKCR men narrowly lost to Chile in the tour opening before convincingly beating Paraguay last weekend and this will be the first-ever fixture between the two nations.

This is Brazil’s first test since they lost 40-15 to Canada in the third-place play-off at La Vila International Rugby Cup in Villajoyosa, Spain, in 2023.

Brazil appointed Emiliano Caffera, a former Uruguay international half-back, as head coach of both the men’s and women’s national 15s teams in October 2023 and he selected thirty of the 36-man Brazilian squad from Cobras which is involved in the Super Rugby Americas tournament.  This will be Caffera’s first test in charge of the Brazilians who are known as Os Tupis.

Hong Kong China Men’s head coach Andrew Douglas said of the final match against Brazil, “They will also have a big strong pack and they love the physicality and macho mentality in South America. We will have to move them around and change the points of attack but also not run away from the physicality and the set piece dominance.”

Hong Kong China has selected a strong lineup for their final match with a sizable pack. The front row sees the Cinnamond brothers prop down with Richmond Rugby Clubs Alex Post at hooker and South Arican-born Luke Van Der Smit starting at number 8.

Youngsters Matteo Avitabile and Jack Coombes are the half-pack pairing, while dangerous backs include Nathan De Thierry at outside centre, Seb Brien on the right wing, and Paul Altier on the left wing. Joshua Hrstich captains the side again.

Pablo Deluca (Argentina) is the match referee.
