Borneo 7s International Rugby Tournament 2024

The 19th Borneo 7s International Rugby Tournament will be held in conjunction with the 1st Sandakan Carnival from March 9th-10th, 2024 at the Eagles Rugby Club, Sandakan. There will also be a Borneo Classic Tens 2024 Vets preceding the 7s tournament on March 8th 2024.

The organisers of the Borneo Sevens confirmed in December 2023 that there had been “Good discussions between the Organizing Chairman Mr Vela Tan and Jonathan Tan of the 20th Borneo 7s International Rugby Tournament with YB Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Chairman of Sabah Tourism Board”. In addition to the rugby, visitors can enjoy the 1st Sandakan Carnival with Cult 1st Sandakan Edition Car Meet, a Food Fest, and many other activities to support Sandakan Tourism.

As many as 400 international rugby players will be involved in 24 teams from around the world for the “Greenest 7s in the World”.

The Sevens tournament has attracted many international teams and top touring teams over the years, including in the 2023 edition which saw the Thailand Men’s, Hong Kong China Women’s and Men’s, Uzbekistan Women’s and Men’s, India Women’s, Kazakhstan Women’s, and the Singapore National Development Teams (Women and Men) all participate from Asia.

For 2024, international teams from Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Hong Kong, France, and Kazakhstan were expected to be involved but the final lineup shows that there are fewer national teams and it is a smaller-looking competition overall in 2024. Several Asian national 7s teams are in action in the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 second leg in Montevideo.

Of the regional national teams, only the Uzbekistan national 7s teams (women and men) appear to be competing at the Borneo 7s International Rugby Tournament 2024.
