Bingham Cup 2024 To Be Hosted In Rome
The Bingham Cup 2024 will take place in Rome, Italy from 23-26 May – the inclusive rugby tournament has been running since 2002 held in memory of 9/11 gay rugby hero Mark Bingham and Rome will host the 11th edition.
The organisers said of the confirmation, “We are so proud to host players, friends, family, and supporters for this great moment of sport and celebration! Inclusion, conviviality and fair play are the keywords of the event!” This will be the first ever to be hosted in Italy.
The most recent Bingham Cup was held in Ottawa after several delays caused by the global pandemic but they hope to make the Rome edition of the rugby tournament the biggest yet.
The Rome bid was presented by Libera Rugby with the support of Roma Capitale, The National Office of Racial Antidiscrimination (UNAR) and the Italian Rugby Union, and beat out the bid from Brisbane.
The Bingham Cup will “see all the IGR’S (International Gay Rugby) affiliates worldwide, with a majority of European ones and, as the previous editions, will be an international event that will be able to attract thousands of people who will pour in the Eternal City” said the press release.
The tournament delivery and organization will be handled by Libera Rugby which is the first inclusive team in Italy, and affiliated with IGR since 2015. Nicolò Zito, Libera’s Rugby Chairman said “We are very pleased and proud that our bid has been deemed to be the best by all the affiliates…we have put together a highly qualified team that is already working on organising the Cup.”
They are hoping for over 140 participating teams and around 10,000 athletes, coaches and supporters to attend the Bingham Cup 2024 in Rome.
