It feels great to write those words – Best Southeast Asia social rugby tournaments 2022. After such a long period of disruption, and although we are not fully in the clear yet, SEA seems to be on course to recover from the pandemic.
We look at the social rugby and touch tournaments which are being confirmed for the remainder of 2022 in SEA.

Return To Play Touch Rugby Festival – Philippines
Although not open to all players, the Return To Play Touch Rugby Festival 2022 is set to be played at the Circuit Makati Gatorade-Chelsea Blue Pitch in March and April.
The Philippines Touch Association and PRFU are hosting the event with the Touch Association saying: “We know you missed playing touch rugby. Now’s the time to round up the team and join the #ReturnToPlay Touch Rugby Festival. Assemble teams of five for the Mixed Open on March 26 and for the Men’s and Women’s Open on April 2.”
This event is done in partnership with the Philippine Rugby – Philippine Volcanoes National Team and is open to all PRFU and TAP clubs. Please take note that we will be doing beach touch rules for this tourney.”

Pattaya Tens 2022 (Chris Kay Memorial Tens) – Thailand
The Pattaya Panthers Rugby Club are the organisers of the Pattaya Tens (Chris Kay Memorial Tens) two-day tournament in Pattaya, Thailand.
The tournament website is under development but the Panthers have said: “It seems that we may be going ahead at last, with the return of the Chris Kays Memorial Rugby Tournament this year, with dates currently set on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May 2022.”
The Pattaya Tens rugby tournament is dedicated to the memory of the Pattaya Panthers RFC former captain Chris Kays, who was tragically killed in the Bali bombings in 2002.

- Mixed Touch
Usually, the tens social rugby tournament is a Men’s Open Social Tens but as the 20th year anniversary, more divisions are being played:

- Venue: Pattana Sports Club, Pattaya, Thailand
Phuket Tens Rugby 2022 – Thailand
The organisers added that “this year’s event see’s the 20th anniversary of the Asia Center Foundation and we aim to make this one of the best years in raising funds for them.”
The tournament includes:
- Men’s Open – 16 Teams
- Ladies Open – 8 Teams
- Coffin Dodgers O35s – 12 Teams
- One Foot in the Grave O45s – 4 Teams
The final list of teams is still being compiled said the organisers, but this is the unconfirmed team list for the 2022 Aussie Bar Phuket International 10’s.

Bali Tens Rugby Tournament 2022 – Indonesia
The Bali 10s 2022 filled all of its team slots within hours of opening its expression of interest on 28th October 2021, with the social tournament set to be played from 15-16 October 2022.
Bali Rugby Club is hosting the Bali 10’s tournament this year under the supervision of Indonesia Rugby.
The organisers (Bali Rugby Club) confirmed there should be 3 divisions: Open Men’s 10s, Woman’s 10s, and Vets 10s.
- Date: 15-16 October 2022
- Venue: Jimbaran at the Lapangan Yoga Perkanthi, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali.
Cambodia Tens Rugby 2022
The Cambodia Tens is set to again include Men’s, Women’s, and Old Boys divisions in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The organisers said in March 2022: “Travel restrictions are getting lifted progressively across the world and we are confident to get together next October in Phnom Penh for this highly anticipate regional social sports event.”
The two-day social tournament has taken place at the Northbridge International School in recent years.

Bangkok International Rugby Sevens (November – Unconfirmed)
The latest news from the organisers of the Bangkok International Rugby Sevens is that they are hopeful of a November 2022 tournament date, but this still needs to be confirmed. The tournament was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
“We absolutely want to hold this year’s tournament and are working towards this by gaining the appropriate approvals within Thailand, but with the COVID pandemic still making its way around the world with the Omicron variant, we have to make sure our final decisions make it safe for you to travel and have a great time at the Bangkok Sevens Tournament.
We are hoping to secure either the first or second week of November 2022. We will let you know as soon as possible when we have everything organized and approvals in place.”
The sevens rugby tournament has been running since 1995 and usually has International Men’s, Women’s, Asia Social, Under 18 & Under 16 Boys divisions.
