Bangladesh Rugby Football Union joins Asia Rugby as full member
The Bangladesh Rugby Football Union was accepted as a full member to Asia Rugby following Asia Rugby EXCO and Council meetings.
During the course of the past weekends Taiwan Rugby week which included the Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 and Taiwan 10s, the Asia Rugby EXCO and Council met to discuss ongoing topics concerning rugby in Asia. They have since announced that Bangladesh RFU is now a full member of Asia Rugby, after being an associate member since 7 December 2014.
Bangladesh Rugby Football Union’s Executive Member Tareque Khanmajlis told Asia Rugby:
“We are so delighted to be named a full member of Asia Rugby. We are trying to develop the sport in Bangladesh, we have colleges and schools all now involved, and all the newspapers are now giving us a lot of media attention…..Our country is highly populated so the opportunity is huge. We hope that rugby will continue to grow.

In January this year, the BRFU ran a Volunteer Coaches Orientation Course which included 32 new volunteer coaches, 13 of which were women. At the same time, the Union announced a project called Rugby At Least Once a Month (RAOM). The aim of RAEOM was to target 100 areas in Bangladesh to start rugby practices and retain Get Into Rugby participants.
Last week, the New Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Rugby Federation Union was introduced as Mahfizul Islam.
According to Khanmajlis, football and cricket remain the most popular sports in the country.
