World Rugby disappointingly is not hosting a World Rugby U20 Championship or Trophy tournaments in 2025, the regional tournament has no qualification benefits but remains hugely important for player pathway development.
Hong Kong China Rugby are the defending champions after beating Chinese Taipei 22-7 and Korea 62-7 in the Asia Rugby Championship U19 2023 hosted in Hong Kong. As a result, they qualified for the 2024 World Rugby U20 Trophy held in Scotland, while Japan also competed after being relegated from the World Rugby U20 Championship last year.
Neither Asian team were promoted from the Trophy event so we are not sure what the pathways are when the U20 tournaments are next held, presumably in 2026.
The Korea Rugby Union said via Korean media, “In this competition, we hope that the players will fully demonstrate their skills and teamwork honed through selection camps and intensive training and impress upon the national teams the bold spirit of the young warriors.”
Siân Moore, Hong Kong China Rugby’s Head of Performance Pathways said via HKCR, “The Asia Rugby U19s Men’s Championship is a huge part of our player pathway in terms of developing players to that exposure to a high-performance environment….We want to best prepare these rugby players to succeed in the senior setting and not throw them in when they are not well-rounded.”
Oliver Clarke captained the Hong Kong China U19 side to victory in 2023 and added of playing again, “The squad has progressed well and the mix of boys from overseas and local Hong Kong-based players has been exciting. I am excited to lace up the boots against the likes of Japan, South Korea, and Chinese Taipei.”
