Asia Rugby U18 Boys Sevens 2019: Results
Malaysia won the Asia Rugby Under 18 Boys 7s title in China over the weekend, beating the hosts 14-10 in the final to defend their crown from 2018.
Over the two days, the 5 teams played a series of round-robin games before the top four placed teams competed for 1st-3rd in the final standings. Surprisingly the team to miss out on the final playoff games was Hong Kong.
Malaysian Under 18 rugby success
The Malaysia Rugby website, with a slight dose of favouritism reported on the results:
“Malaysia had a perfect record in the pool match with 4 wins out of 4. However, it was not a walk in the park for the team as they have to fight for every win. Malaysia got off to a positive start with 22–7 win over Chinese Taipei. They also got the revenge over Hong Kong, who beat them in the final of Asia School months back with 21–12 win. Malaysia ended the day on top of the table with another outstanding display to snatch the win over South Korea with 28 – 21 scoreline”
Hong Kong U18 7s rugby disappointment
Hong Kong Rugby Union posted on their FB page following Sunday’s results with a statement from Head Coach Tomos Howells “It was a valuable experience for the young squad, especially for the new players to have the opportunity to wear the jersey and represent HK at international level. Both the players and management team can take a lot from this tournament moving forward.“
In the recent Asia Schools Under Under 18 tournament, Hong Kong was crowned the champion so they must have been expecting a better result in Kunming, China. They only recorded one win over the course of the weekend, a victory on day one over Chinese Taipei (17-14).

Final Standings 2019
With Malaysia beating China and HK missing out, Chinese Taipei thumped Korea 43-0 for 3rd place which would also be seen as a surprise result. However, they also beat them in the pool-phase 33-14.
