Asia Rugby Sevens Men’s Trophy 2021 To Be Played in Phuket

Asia Rugby has announced that Asia Rugby Sevens Men’s Trophy 2021 (played in 2022) will take place from 9-10 April 2022 in Phuket, Thailand‎ at the Surakul Stadium.

Asia Rugby Sevens Men’s Trophy 2021

The ARST tournament will be hosted by the Thailand Rugby Union who will also be hosting an invitational Rugby Sevens Tournament for Women, an Asia Rugby sanctioned event.

It is odd timing, as the weekend is the same as the recently confirmed HSBC Singapore Sevens event – it would have been great to see all teams at the same location (or city) if possible, rather than ask rugby fans in the region to split their time and allegiances in tuning in to support the tournaments.

Asia Rugby says it will continue to implement its ‘Return to Play’ strategy for the Asia Rugby Sevens Men’s Trophy tournament.

No mention of which nations would be participating was made by the governing body for the region at the time of the announcement but we can now confirm the men’s and women’s teams which will be playing over the weekend in

We have also heard from reliable sources that the timing of the event is linked to Unions having funding cut if these tournaments did not take place.

In addition, the Asia Rugby President is said to be attending the tournament in Thailand and possibly visiting other SEA rugby unions.

Asia Rugby Men’s Division 3 West Championship 2022

Asia Rugby has also confirmed that Iran will host the Asia Rugby Men’s Division 3 West Championship 2022 – and claims this is the first international XV rugby event ever to be held in the country.

The Asia Rugby tournament will take place in Tehran from 9-14 May 2022, with an expression of interest to join hosts Iran, from:

• Qatar
• Lebanon
• Syria
• Iraq
• Oman
• Jordan

The Asia Rugby Tournament calendar can be found online – but in our experience, it is not always up to date. The calendar still lists the Asia Rugby 7s Clubs Challenge to take place in Russia although there is a ban on Russian rugby from World  Rugby.
