Asia Rugby Releases Partial 2023 Tournament Calendar

Asia Rugby has released the first 2023 tournament calendar which lists a number of key national teams sevens and XVs tournaments for the region.
This is a great framework of events to work off, but in our experience of recent years, sometimes events do move dates and often the actual participating national teams, venues and formats of the tournaments (as well as schedules) are released very late. Let’s hope this situation is improved upon in 2023 to allow the teams, media and fans to best be prepared.
The first half of the Asia Rugby Calendar is dedicated to fifteens rugby in the region while, Asia Rugby says it will be hosting five major 7s events, along with three World Rugby Sevens Series legs in 2023.

Asia Rugby 2023 XVs Tournament Calendar
Asia Rugby Men’s Division III West 2023
The Asia Rugby Division III West was postponed from 2022 due to political instability in Iran and will feature a one-off game between Iran and Qatar in the UAE on the 10th of February 2023.
The winner of this men’s XV match will earn a promotion to the Asia Rugby Division III Playoff tournament in March 2023.

Asia Rugby Division III Playoff tournament 2023
The playoff tournament will feature India, Kazakhstan and the winner of the Iran vs Qatar match (which Qatar won) of the Asia Rugby Men’s Division III West 2023 played in February 2023.
The tentative date is in March 2023 with no venue yet confirmed – the winner has a pathway to the top tier of the Asia Rugby Championship, and potential Rugby World Cup qualification.

Asia Rugby Men’s Championship 2023
The Asia Rugby Men’s Championship 2023 will feature Hong Kong, South Korea, and Malaysia and will be played in June 2023.
The fixture dates and venues are still TBC by Asia Rugby.

Asia Rugby Women’s Championship 2023
The Asia Rugby Women’s Championship will be played in two tiers according to the governing body. This will form a pathway to the WXV tournament.
In the ARWC 2023, four teams will be involved – Japan, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, and China.
The top team Asia 1 will compete in WXV 2 and the runner-up in WXV 3.

August 2023 sees the Aisa Rugby Sevens season kick off with Asia Rugby Sevens Series taking place across two legs (not three like in previous years?) in August and October.
The Asia Rugby Sevens Series will feature the top 8 women’s and men’s teams.

There will be a standalone Asia Rugby Qualifier tournament to decide which teams head to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics for men and women.

Sakura 7s training at the Emirates Dubai 7s 2022
Other International Tournaments 2023
Interestingly, Asia Rugby says that the HSBC 7s World Series will take place in Dubai in 2023 but as far as we know the venues and calendar for the next season are still to be confirmed as the HSBC World Sevens Series is being restructured.
We know that the Asian Games Rugby Sevens take place in Hangzhou China from 24th September to 26th September 2023 – but it sounds as if the number of teams is still to be confirmed – with either 12 or 16 teams set to be involved.

Asia Rugby confirmed that “all Asia Rugby tournaments will be live-streamed in real-time and will be available free to air across the continent on Asia Rugby and its member unions’ social media platforms.”
