Asia Rugby Men’s 7s Olympic Qualifiers: Tokyo 2020

The Asia Rugby Men’s 7s Olympic Qualifiers will be played in South Korea this coming weekend with 9 national teams hoping to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Hong Kong are the favourites to win the tournament but will be pushed hard by China. The 9 teams are split into pools of 3.

Asia Rugby Sevens Men’s Olympic Qualifiers Pools

HK and China finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 2019 Asia Rugby Sevens earlier this year. Japan won the tournament and automatically qualify for 2020 sevens Olympics as hosts. Sri Lanka finished 4th in the Series and will look to top Pool C in the qualifiers on the weekend. South Korea was placed 5th, the Philippines 6th and Chinese Taipei 8th in the AR 7s Series.

In the Asia Rugby Sevens Men’s Trophy (ARSMT), Malaysia topped the standings followed by Singapore. Both will be hopeful of getting through to the semi-finals. Afghanistan was 8th in the ARSMT and come in as the lowest-ranked team.

The winner of the qualifier tournament will gain qualification to Tokyo 2020 while the runner up will join the 2020 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics Rugby 7s

The men’s 7s rugby competition will run from July 27-29th 2020. The 7s rugby will take place at the Ajinomoto (Tokyo) Stadium which featured at the Rugby World Cup 2019.

Qualified men’s rugby 7s teams 2020

Ten of the 12 teams have been confirmed: Argentina, Canada, Fiji, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Australia, Kenya. The Asian qualifier will be the 11th and the final repechage tournament in 2020 will complete the lineup. See more on World Rugby for teams that have qualified.

The Asian women’s qualifiers was won by China a few weeks ago with Hong Kong ladies finishing as runners up and progressing to the repechage tournament.
