ARWC Division 1 set for finale showdown
The ARWC (Asia Rugby Women’s Championship) Division 1 title is up for grabs today in the Philippines, as the hosts take on a powerful looking Chinese team and Singapore clash with India for 3rd and 4th place.
After the semi-final results from Wednesday’s rugby international matches in which the Philippines overcame India in a tight game 32-27, and China thumped Singapore 59-7, the national sides are seeking a path into the Women’s Rugby World Cup qualification by winning the Division 1 title.
Philippines hooker Ada Milby, a member of World Rugby Council, told Asia Rugby “I was so proud at how the girls dug deep in the match…India were an amazing opponent and they have really improved over the last 12 months. China looked good against Singapore so Saturday’s final is likely to be a thriller.”
Milby played the full 80 minutes despite suffering a broken nose after 5 minutes in the game against India.
China, who came into the tournament as an unknown quantity, played their first XVS women’s rugby union test match since 2011 and trounced last years Division winners, Singapore. They will head into the final as favourites despite the Philipines home ground advantage.
The semi-final results also mean as ScrumQueens explained that, “Singapore and India are therefore the first two teams to be knocked out of the 2021 World Cup.”
In the warmup games, this morning, the Manila Nomads and HMR Ibons battled it out for the 3rd place of the JML Premiership Shield.
The matches will be live streamed on Asia Rugby.
