Ada Milby Secures World Rugby Executive Board Seat
This past week, World Rugby confirmed that one of the two vacant seats on its Executive Board has been filled by Asian representative and current PRFU President Ada Milby. Milby is also represented on the Asia Rugby Committee and is probably the only active player on the 12-member Executive Body which oversees rugby.
In a surprisingly brief statement, World Rugby said, “World Rugby has announced the results of the election for the two vacant seats on its Executive Board run by independent organisation PwC Switzerland. Four candidates were nominated for the election taking place remotely in accordance with World Rugby’s Bye-Laws.
Following the completion of the vote, it was confirmed this morning that Su Carty (Ireland) and Ada Milby (Asia Rugby) have been elected by Council to fill the two vacancies on the Executive Board.”
The Executive Board now has three female representatives but the inclusion of Milby and Carty is significant. They are the first elected members, while Milby is also the first Asian representation on World Rugby’s highest table. (Angela Ruggiero was on the board but appointed to the role independently).
The PRFU added today; “Philippine Rugby is thrilled to announce the election of Ada Milby to World Rugby’s Executive Board. Ada’s appointment marks a historic moment for the global organization as she becomes the first representative from Asia to join the esteemed board.”
The statement continues “As a former captain of the Philippine Women’s Rugby Team, Ada has made significant contributions to the growth of women’s rugby in Asia. Her passion for the sport, combined with her dedication to empowering women and marginalized communities, has garnered widespread recognition and respect within the rugby fraternity. Ada’s visionary leadership has been instrumental in expanding participation, enhancing governance structures, and fostering opportunities for aspiring rugby players at all levels.”
Milby said of the role, “I am deeply honoured to have been elected to the World Rugby Executive Board. I am committed to championing the interests of the global rugby community, with a particular focus on emerging markets. Together, we will create opportunities for players, coaches, and administrators from all backgrounds to thrive and contribute to the future of rugby.”
